Maintenance
Combating bedbug infestations on campus
July 26, 2012
MEMPHIS, TN — Students heading off to college for the 2012-13 school year will bring a combination of practical and decorative accessories to outfit their dorm rooms, according to a press release.
For many, those dormitory "must-haves" will include a variety of products designed to protect them from bedbug infestations, the release stated.
According to the release, Paul Curtis, B.C.E., director of national accounts service quality for Terminix says there are a number of things facility managers can do to address parents'' and students'' growing focus on bedbugs and dormitory living, including:
• Pursue a higher level of education: Many schools, particularly ones that have had heavy or repetitive infestations, conduct regular internal education for staff and have their own inspection and treatment programs in place.
• Not a job for the undergrad: Equally challenging are situations in which students attempt to treat the problem themselves.
• Share the responsibility: Students can just as easily bring bedbugs to school as they can pick the critters up while there.
• Open registration for bedbugs: Bedbugs don’t typically observe the school calendar and can matriculate into facilities at any time during the school year — and beyond.
